5 Tips to Take Care of Your Hair in Winter

If you live where winter weather occurs, then you’re likely familiar with the toll it takes on your hair. Winter weather is harsh on all hair textures and types. Just like skin, hair needs protection from the cold to remain soft and healthy. Defend your tresses from arctic air, whipping winds, static electricity, and even indoor heat. You want to have lovely locks to show off when spring (finally) comes!
In this guide, we’ll give you some important hair care tips
Try these 5 winter hair care tips to keep your hair in great shape—even when it’s freezing outside!

1- Get Weather Protection for Your Hair

Let’s start with a pro hair care tip: protect your hair. The best way to take care of your gorgeous locks is to shield them from the harsh winter. Get a beanie, newsboy, or a warm beret.
Forget about getting messy hat hair afterward. Worry about keeping the elements that dry your hair away from it. If you keep it protected, it’ll be less prone to breakage and drying.
If you’re spending the day indoors at work or home, get a humidifier. Indoor heating also damages your locks and make them dry. Rehydrate the dry indoor air and keep your hair’s moisture on.
You might have heard your grandmother or mother tell you never to leave the home with wet hair. They say it’ll cause you to get a cold. Allow us to debunk it by saying that wet hair won’t give you a cold but it can trigger it.
Although, the fact remains that it’s never a good idea to leave home with damp hair, especially in the winter. Compared to dry hair, a wet mane is more vulnerable to damage. Leave your hair to air dry at home before you head out.

2- Mane Maintenance Matters

Protecting your hair from the weather and winter elements is only half the battle. The other half consists of careful at-home attention. This is where products like moisturizers, conditioners, treatments and hair masks come in.
Getting a deep conditioning hair mask once a week spells great hair care. If your hair’s been through a lot and it’s very damaged, get a hair mask twice a week. Make sure you choose a hair mask treatment that will work well with your hair type.
Do you sometimes feel like straw is growing out of your head instead? What you need is hydrating shampoo and conditioner. Look for products that ingredients like coconut oil, avocado oil, and Aloe Vera.
Anything you put your head against or on your hair is also important.

3- Use the Right Temperatures

Even though a steamy shower might be just what you’re looking for when the temperature is below freezing, hot water can zap moisture from your hair making it brittle and more vulnerable to breaking. Using lukewarm water is the best way to go about a shower or hair wash in the winter. Bring up the water’s temperature and it’s sure to take the moisture from your hair.
Don’t forget to rinse your hair with cool water after. This closes cuticles and pores on your scalp where warm water creates frizz. Cool water also flattens hair and adds natural luster to it.
Speaking of temperatures, did you know that cutting back on heat styling is healthy for your hair? Blow-drying brings out the moisture of your hair, which makes your hair more brittle. Air-dried hair is the best way to manage it in the chilly winter season.
If you don’t have the time to wait for your hair to air dry, take your shower or hair wash in the evening instead. Since heat styling includes using straightening and curling irons, avoid them as well. Instead, try out new heatless hairstyling techniques.

4- Take Care of Winter Hair with Oil

While humans are resilient enough to endure cold winters, our hair isn’t as hardy. Neither is the scalp. Winter brings dry air with it and is one of the causes of dry scalp.
One way to fix dry scalp and hair is with an oil treatment. Olive oil is the best moisturizer for hair. Getting a deep condition with olive oil can help mend brittle winter hair and dry scalp.
You may also find that there are a ton of other oils you can put on your hair. Treating your hair with argan oil is the best anti-frizz hair care. Kalahari melon seed oil works best for those with sensitive skin while coconut oil works for all types of hair.
If your hair is very sensitive to the winter weather, apply hair oil at the ends every day. This helps replenish the moisture of your hair. Use lightweight leave-in formulas with argan oil during the day to keep it protected.

5- Wear a hat

It is important to cover your hair during the winter months to shield it from the moisture-robbing dry air, snow, wind, and rain. This is not the time to worry about dreaded hat hair. The elements dry your hair out, making it more prone to breakage.

Wool, cotton, and other fabrics can cause breakage as well, so make sure to line your hat with silk or satin to help prevent damage. Fight static electricity under your hat by using a dry oil spray. Dry oils are weightless and contain natural oils that moisturize hair, bringing back its shine.

Follow these tips and with a little extra effort, you can keep your hair hydrated and looking great this winter.
